2010 Opel Corsa - the best value for money in supermini segment
The updated Opel Corsa is expected to come in January 2010. The small car features a lot of changes like re-vamped powertrain line-up, chassis improvements and a steering recalibration.The new Corsa will offer much better performance at even lower fuel consumption. Besides that the comfort for occupants is improved and the driving experience is far better, than the previous version of the car.
The exterior has no changes at all, the main updates are under the skin of Corsa. There are two available models - the coupé-like three-door and the family friendly five-door model. The small car is so well appreciated all over the world, that it accounts for some 30 percent of Opel/Vauxhall total sales.
The new engine line-up included in Opel Corsa models fully complies with Euro 5 standards. All engines have been revised to lower the fuel consumption and the harmful CO2 emissions. The 1.2 and 1.4 liter Twinport engine are each available in two versions with different outputs according to the customer wishes. Some of them prefer better fuel efficiency, the others will opt the better performance. The power units from 1.0 to 1.4 liter now need only 5 to 5.5 liters gasoline per 100km and on the top of this the maximum CO2 is 129 g/km.
The changes, which delivered these low numbers are:
- A new oil pump optimizes oil pressure and reduces frictions, lowering fuel consumption.
- A newly developed double camshaft phaser on the 1.2- and 1.4-liter engines improves the combustion process, allowing increased power and torque.
- A new management of the thermostat reduces the engine warm-up phase, further lowering fuel consumption and emissions.
- A shift-up indicator in the cluster informs drivers how they can save fuel.
The least powerful engine is 1.0 liter 3-cylinder with 65hp and 90N/m of torque. The previous generation of this engine developed only 60hp and 88Nm of torque and it had higher fuel consumption. The new engine reduced fuel consumption and emissions with a 13 percent. Now it needs 5.0 liter fuel and emits 117 g/km (from 5.6 liter/100 km and 134 g/km).
In this power segment Corsa is available with 1.2 liter 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 70hp and 115N/m of torque. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are respectively 5.3 liter/100 km and 124 g/km.
In the next greater powered segment Corsa offers new version of 1.2 liter engine with 85hp and 115N/m of torque. Again there are increasing of the horse powers and N/m with 5 and reducing of the fuel consumption and emissions with an 11 percent with manual transmission and with a 13 percent with Easytronic manual automated transmission. (5.1 liter/100 km and 119 g/km CO2 vs 5.8 l and 137 g).
Here is the new generation of 1.4 liter, which now have a capacity of 1,398 cc. It develops 87hp and 130N/m of torque. The fuel consumption is just 5.5 liter / 100km and the CO2 are only 129 g/km. The improvement compared to the previous version is 12 percent.
In the 100hp segment there is another 1.4 liter engine with exactly this amount of hp and 130N/m of torque. This engine needs only 5.5 liter /100 km and emits 129 g/km CO2. The acceleration and the top speed aren't impressive, but they are good enough for everyday driving - 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds and top speed of 180 km/h.
The 1.6 liter turbo petrol engine installed in the Corsa GSi developes 150hp and the OPC version reaches 192hp. The engine is calibrated for Euro 5, so there are significant improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The sporty power unit now needs 7.3 l for 100 km and emits just 171 g/km on the GSI and 172 g/km on the OPC.
Because of the engines updated and especially boosting the torque at the lower revs, there are significant changes in the transmissions. The customers can choose between gearboxes with performance-oriented short- or economy-focused wide ratios.

There are two new diesel engines available for 2010 Corsa. The mighty 1.7CDTI with 130hp and 300Nm of torque and the extreme fuel efficient 1.3CDTI ecoFLEX.
The 1.7CDTI is just a masterpiece by offering extraordinary good figures. The new version develops 130hp and 300Nm of torque, respectively with 5 and 20 more than the previous. The car has also greater top speed and better acceleration - 0-100km/h in 9.5 seconds and top speed of 200km/h. Besides that, because of the increased torque the car now accelerates from 80 to 120km/h in 5th gear in 9.3 seconds. On the top of everything the new 1.7CDTI now emits only 118 g/km CO2
The upgrades of 1.7CDTI include a new turbo charger, a new fuel injection system, reducing of the load on the generator, a new lighter intake manifold. Everything that helped the engineers to make the engine Euro 5 compliant.
1.3CDTI ecoFlex is the lowest emitting engine available for the new Corsa. It develops 95hp and 190Nm of troque. This engine not only emits just 98 g/km CO2 , but it needs 3.7 litres of diesel to cover 100km. This version replaces the 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with 75hp and 109 g/km CO2 , which was only available in 3-door version.

The chassis improvements include:
- On all models except OPC, engineers have modified the rear axle by rotating the torsion profile of the compound crank by 20° - from 15 to 35°. This results in improved stability in lane-change maneuvers.
- On the comfort chassis (from all models except the Sport trim as well as the GSi and OPC versions), dampers in the front and the rear have been re-tuned to further improve the ride comfort without compromising the driving dynamics. At the same time, engineers have opted for new, softer jounce bumpers in the front struts. The ecoFLEX models also get softer jounce bumpers in the rear.
- All diesel variants are also equipped with new, softer front springs.
- All Corsa equipped with the comfort chassis received a new front anti-roll bar, whose diameter has been increased by 1 mm.
- The mountings of the stabilizer have been re-designed on all variants, resulting in reduced body roll, and compensating for the softer set up of the suspension.
