2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL - Zero Emission hypercar
SLS AMG E-CELL is a state-of-the-art super sports car featuring zero-emission high-tech drive and boasting 535hp and 880Nm of torque. The gullwing with electric drive is part of the "AMG Performance 2015" programme aiming to improve fuel consumption and lower emissions. The four compact electric motors each achieve 12 000 rpm and are positioned near to the wheels. As a result, compared with wheel-hub motors the unsprung masses are substantially reduced. One transmission per axle transmits the power.
It is finished in stunning fluorescent "AMG lumilectric magno" paint. There is no doubt that you will notice the car, whenever it goes nearby.
Ola Källenius, chairman of the board (from 1 July 2010) of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said: "We take social responsibility very seriously and with the SLS AMG E-CELL we are demonstrating a further milestone in our "AMG Performance 2015" strategy. It is our goal to continually reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of new models in the coming years, while at the same time enhancing the core brand value of performance".
SLS E-CELL accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 4 seconds – which is almost the same like the high performance SLS AMG with 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 571 hp, which can accelerate to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds.
All electric vehicles have one huge advantage over the combustion engines, torque build-up with an electric motor is instantaneous, which means that the maximum torque is available virtually from a standstill. E-CELL features four motors, four wheels: the intelligent and permanent all-wheel drive guarantees driving dynamics at the highest level, while at the same time providing the best possible active safety. Perfect traction is therefore ensured for all four driven wheels, whatever the weather conditions.
One of the main problems of the batteries is that they have been depleted incredibly fast, especially, if you use the full power of the electric motors. This problem is solved by using of cutting-edge technologies in creating new batteries.
Now, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery provides 400 V and 40Ah. The energy content is 48kWh. The main battery includes 324 lithium-ion polymer cells.
